About Us

The Mesothelioma Information and Resource Group (MIRG) is an organization created to assist patients, family, friends and loved ones in learning about mesothelioma and other asbestos-related injuries. It is the aim of MIRG to provide information about the disease, its causes, its treatment and its personal and legal impact. We hope that you find this web site to be informative and useful, and we welcome all input regarding its content and design.

Mission

MIRG’s goal is threefold. First, we aim to provide a site that presents information about mesothelioma, lung cancer, asbestosis and other asbestos-related diseases. The information is intended for the lay person, who has little to no background in medicine. It is presented in a format that we hope is both simple and educational.

MIRG’s second goal is to provide a means by which patients, family, friends and loved ones can relate their stories to others, and if desired, contact others who have struggled with this disease. Toward that end, we have provided the stories of actual mesothelioma victims and their families for you to read in our You Are Not Alone section. You also have the ability to contact others who have been down this road themselves-whether as a patient or as the spouse or loved one of a patient. We hope this will be a way for people to deal with the significant mental and physical anguish that accompanies this disease. By communicating with others, you will soon learn that you are not alone. As a group, the experience developed from years of dealing with mesothelioma and its lasting effects can be shared for the common benefit of all. We hope to give others the strength and courage to weather this storm. The group includes persons suffering from mesothelioma, lung cancer and asbestosis, as well as their family members and friends. It is moderated by its members, not by doctors or lawyers. It is not a "chat room." It is a confidential way for people to contact others. MIRG’s final goal is to educate victims of mesothelioma and other asbestos-related diseases about their legal rights. Not unexpectedly, when learning that one is suffering from mesothelioma or another asbestos-related disease, few people think of the possible legal implication of the disease. However, anyone who was injured as a result of their exposure to asbestos has a potential legal claim against the manufacturers of asbestos products. This can be significant for several reasons:

First, the medical costs associated with treating a disease such as mesothelioma can be staggering.

Second, it has been known since the 1930’s that asbestos was hazardous, and caused cancer in humans. In spite of this knowledge, the manufacturers of asbestos products made a business decision to ignore the obvious dangers and sell their products without warning of the hidden dangers. Having made millions of dollars selling these deadly products in the past, they can and should be held accountable for your pain and suffering now.

Finally and perhaps most importantly, legal compensation is a means by which many victims of mesothelioma provide enough money to support a spouse or loved one, or to leave behind a legacy to help put their grandchildren through college. Who We Are

MIRG was formed in 1999. It was conceptualized by the attorneys and several clients of Coady Law Firm. As a part of their work, Coady Law Firm were in near daily contact with the victims of mesothelioma and other asbestos-related diseases, as well as the family and friends of those victims. In addition, many co-workers and union members came to Coady Law Firm with questions about asbestos exposure and asbestos injuries. Finally, a number of clients of Coady Law Firm expressed a desire to communicate with other persons who have battled with mesothelioma or have watched a loved one battle with this terrible disease. In order to address these various concerns, it was decided to put together a group to help spread information about mesothelioma, in a manner that was easy to access and free to the public. That group is MIRG.
